Try to become not a man of success, but try rather to become a man of value.Albert Einstein

Source and a wording difference
This sentence is a word-order variant of a passage in William Miller’s Old Man’s Advice to Youth, LIFE, 2 May 1955, pages 62 and 64. Its meaning follows the printed passage on page 64, but the image wording is not an exact transcription.
Read the digitised LIFE issue at Google Books, page 64. Miller recounts Einstein’s advice to Pat Miller. The next sentences contrast outward success with what someone contributes. This is a conversation report, not an audio record.
Choose a contribution with a visible use
Pick a small task that could help someone: improve an unclear instruction, do an agreed practical job or offer useful feedback. First check that the contribution is wanted. Limit the effort, perhaps to fifteen minutes, and afterwards look at its effect rather than applause: is something clearer, finished or easier? If not, ask what would be more useful. Your worth as a person does not depend on how much you produce or give away. This exercise is a present-day suggestion from Motivation4you, not part of the reported conversation.
